HOW DOES SILT CURTAIN WORK?

Main function of silt curtain is to enclose turbidity and to minimize influence on outside sensitive area . Enclosed by silt curtains, current velocity inside is much lower than outside velocity. This means silt curtain is accelerating sedimentation of silt by reducing flow velocity. This situation can be seen with following flash file computer simulation.

SILT CURTAIN IS NOT A FILTER

typical misunderstanding on silt curtains is that silt curtain works as a filter passing water through but not soil. Small holes of curtain fabric is clogged by soil very soon under water and it does not pass soil nor water anymore. If there is no silt curtain around the turbidity source, free flow velocity will transport turbidity long distance. If there are silt curtains around the turbidity source, transport distance of soil is minimized because of controlled flow velocity.
